Why Extraction Is the Only Long-Term Wisdom Teeth Pain Relief

March 1, 2022

Do the words ‘wisdom teeth’ make you wince? Many people experience pain and discomfort when their wisdom teeth erupt as they are the last teeth in your adult mouth to push through the surface of your gums. In some cases, wisdom teeth do not erupt at all and sometimes only 1 or 2 of your wisdom teeth will come through. Whether you have 1, 2, 3, 4 or more (it’s possible!) of your wisdom teeth erupting, it is likely that you will experience pain. This is due to the evolution of the human jaw and the fact that, in most cases, we genetically do not need these wisdom teeth in modern life. Evolution takes time and, in the meantime, your local dental professional will most likely recommend that you have your wisdom teeth removed. If they are not causing you any pain, you may not need this procedure. If you are experiencing pain, however, pain medication is not necessarily a long-term solution.

When Do I Need to Worry About My Wisdom Teeth?

In most cases, wisdom teeth will erupt between the ages of 18 and 24. Sometimes they can erupt in early teenage years and, in rare cases, in late adulthood. Everyone is unique, especially when it comes to dental needs, but you only need to worry about wisdom teeth if they are causing you pain or discomfort. They may start to cause pain in your jaw before they even start to erupt and this is usually an early warning sign. In many people, the jaw and mouth are not large enough to accommodate the wisdom teeth so, if they begin to erupt, this can push the teeth together and cause overcrowding. The earliest a wisdom tooth can be safely extracted is when the root has developed to about two-thirds of its full size, and they can be extracted at any age.

What do I do for Wisdom Teeth Pain Relief?

Although pain medication and hot and cold compresses can alleviate pain in the mouth, it is most likely that if your wisdom teeth are causing you pain, you will need to have them extracted. Impacted wisdom teeth can result in tremendous pain, damage to other teeth, and other dental problems. They are also hard to clean, so they may be more vulnerable to tooth decay and gum disease than your other teeth.

Impacted wisdom teeth that cause dental complications are usually removed. Some dentists and oral surgeons also recommend removing impacted wisdom teeth even if they don’t cause symptoms, to prevent future problems, so extracting the wisdom teeth is a common procedure. If you are experiencing these common symptoms, you should visit your dentist about the need for extraction as soon as possible:

  • Red or swollen gums
  • Tender or bleeding gums
  • Jaw pain
  • Swelling around the jaw
  • Bad breath
  • An unpleasant taste in your mouth
  • Difficulty opening your mouth
