What to Expect During Your First Dental Visit to Coastal Dental Care
If you’re visiting Coastal Dental Care for the first time, welcome. Whether you’re here for a routine check-up, looking for a family-friendly dentist or just getting back on top of your oral health, we’re here to make your first dental visit a smooth and reassuring experience.
With more than 15 locations across South East Queensland and Northern New South Wales, Coastal Dental Care is built around friendly service, clinical excellence and personalised care. We understand that starting with a new dentist can be a bit nerve-racking, especially if it’s been a while or you’re bringing your child in for the first time.
Here’s a step-by-step guide on what to expect during your first dental visit to Coastal Dental Care, how to prepare, and how we help you feel right at home.
Booking and Arrival
Booking your first appointment at Coastal Dental Care is easy. You can book online through our website, call your local practice or drop in to find a time that works for you. Most of our clinics offer early morning and afternoon appointments to fit in around work or school.
When booking, we’ll ask a few questions about your medical history and what brings you in. That might be a general check-up, a specific concern or your child’s first visit. We’ll also let you know about any new patient promotions or whether your child is eligible for the Child Dental Benefits Schedule.
Upon arrival, our front desk team will greet you and assist with any needs you may have. We recommend arriving about 10 minutes early to complete a new patient form if you haven’t already done so online. If you have private health insurance, bring your card so we can process your claim through HICAPS.
Need to bring anything?
- Health fund card (if applicable)
- Any previous dental or medical records
- A list of current medications
- Medicare card (for CDBS-eligible children)
Initial Assessment and Discussion
You’ll be taken into the treatment room where your Coastal Dental Care dentist and assistant will introduce themselves and take some time to understand your needs. We believe in building long-term relationships with our patients, and that starts with a relaxed conversation about your oral health, lifestyle and goals.
If you’re feeling nervous, let us know. We care for many anxious new patients on the Gold Coast and are happy to take things slowly. Our team is supportive, non-judgmental and trained to help you feel at ease.
During your check-up, your dentist will conduct a thorough visual examination of your teeth, gums, jaw, and soft tissues. We’ll also check your bite and look for any signs of wear, decay or gum disease. For children, the visit is made fun and friendly to help them feel comfortable while we check on tooth development and oral hygiene habits.
X-Rays, Cleaning and Treatment Planning
To get a complete understanding of your oral health, we may recommend digital X-rays, especially if it’s your first visit or if you haven’t had them recently. These images help us spot issues that can’t be seen with the naked eye, such as cavities between teeth, impacted teeth, or early bone loss.
We also usually perform a scale and clean during your first visit. This removes plaque and tartar build-up from around the teeth and gum line, helping to prevent gum disease and tooth decay. It also leaves your mouth feeling noticeably cleaner.
If any issues are found during your exam or X-rays, your dentist will explain everything clearly and discuss your options. You’ll receive a personalised treatment plan that outlines any recommended follow-up appointments, from fillings or fluoride treatment to cosmetic or orthodontic options you may be considering.
There’s no pressure and no confusion, just honest guidance from our experienced team.
Making Follow-Up Appointments
If your oral health is in good shape, we’ll usually recommend booking a check-up and clean every six months to stay on top of things. If your treatment plan includes additional care, such as fillings, wisdom teeth assessment, or orthodontic referrals, we’ll help you find suitable times for those appointments.
We can also check your health fund benefits and explain any out-of-pocket costs before you commit to treatment. Coastal Dental Care accepts most private health insurers, and we offer on-the-spot HICAPS claiming at all locations.
For families, we make it easy to coordinate care across multiple members. If your child is eligible for the Child Dental Benefits Schedule, we can help you access those benefits and provide a clear understanding of what’s included.
Need a fluoride application? A sports mouthguard? Or just a second opinion? Your first visit is an excellent opportunity to discuss any issues you’d like help with. We’re here to support your long-term oral health in a way that suits your lifestyle.

Is it OK to be nervous?
Yes, it’s completely normal. Many patients feel nervous about visiting the dentist. Our team will proceed at your pace, explain everything along the way, and ensure you feel supported.
