Holistic Dentistry
What is holistic dentistry?
The holistic approach to dentistry takes each patient’s physical, emotional and mental health and wellness into consideration, rather than just treating the patient’s oral health. General health and oral health are intrinsically linked, and holistic dentistry looks to promote both. Holistic dentistry combines science with traditional and proven natural healing principles and may include treatment by other allied health professionals such as naturopaths, holistic GPs, osteopaths and craniosacral therapists.
What does an holistic dentist do?
Our dentist’s most-performed holistic dental procedure is the safe and effective removal of mercury amalgam fillings. The amalgam filling procedure is performed alongside a detoxification process. Once your mercury amalgam filling has been safely removed, they will be replaced with more bio-compatible materials. These materials are compatible with your body and minimise adverse effects.
Holistic dentistry isn’t just about amalgam removals though; our dentists practice most aspects of general dentistry, but with a holistic approach so the patient’s overall health is taken into consideration.
Why should I have amalgam fillings removed?
Amalgam fillings are made of a mixture of mercury (about 50%), copper, silver and tin. Mercury is a heavy metal and highly toxic to the body. By safely removing the amalgam from your teeth, completing a detoxification process, and refilling the cavity with a bio-compatible material, holistic dentistry aims to eliminate the toxic mercury from your body, improving your overall health.
What basic principles does holistic dentistry adhere to?
Holistic dentistry looks at the overall health of each patient from a physical and emotional viewpoint. In doing this, holistic dentistry adheres to the following basic principles:
- Avoid amalgam fillings, and safely remove existing amalgam fillings
- Avoid root canals and have them removed if they are causing problems
- Eat a nutritious diet as your overall health and your oral health are intrinsically linked
- Extractions should avoid leaving cavities in the jaw bone as these can become infected
Will I need to see anyone besides my holistic dentist?
As part of your treatment, dentists may also include treatment alongside other allied health professionals. This may include holistic GPs, naturopaths, craniosacral therapists and osteopaths. Holistic dentistry combines the best of science and proven natural therapies, so your overall health is always in mind.
