Invisalign vs SmileStyler – Clear aligner systems
Our team investigated both options and compared suitability, treatment process, treatment length, and price.
What is Invisalign and SmileStyler?
Invisalign and SmileStyler are both virtually invisible orthodontic treatments. Instead of traditional metal braces, patients wear clear aligners which can be removed for eating foods, brushing, and flossing. Both options provide the patient with a series of custom-made clear aligners to treat their individual case.
Both clear aligner solutions are suitable for teenagers as well as adults.
Invisalign and SmileStyler have been designed to treat a variety of orthodontic issues. In general, they can help with dental issues such as overbites, underbites, crossbites, open bites, gaps between your teeth, crowding, and crooked teeth.
However, both treatments might not be the right solution for severe cases for the issues above.
Both options start with a consultation where your dentist will take a 3D intraoral scan of your teeth and gums. The clear aligner company will then assess the scan and determine if you are suitable for the treatment.
On one hand, Invisalign then proceeds and manufactures your on average, 40 aligners for the entire treatment. While, SmileStyler will only custom-make your first set of aligners which you will wear for 6-12 weeks. Your dentist will then take another scan and SmileStyler will produce the next set of aligners.
Compared to Invisalign aligners which are manufactured overseas, all SmileStyler aligners are Australian-made. As well, you will wear each Invisalign aligner for a two- to three-week period whereas SmileStyler you only wear your aligner for one to two weeks before moving on to the next one.
Both treatments require you to wear an aligner for 20-22 hours a day. You should remove your aligners when you eat, brush your teeth and floss.
SmileStyler treatment will conclude after 3 to 6 stages of scans and aligner cycles every 6 to 12 weeks. The overall process usually takes between 24 and 72 weeks. Invisalign can treat more complex cases than SmileStyler. For this reason, the treatment duration may be longer, and usually varies from 104 up to 156 weeks (2-3 years). However, the fast-tracked Invisalign Go treatment may only take between 3 to 6 months.
Another difference is that there is no refinement necessary for SmileStyler treatment while Invisalign most of the time requires refinements at the end of treatment. This may further prolong the treatment time.
The costs for both treatments can vary depending on your case and treatment length. Usually, the price for both ranges between $5,000 and $7,500. Your dentist will be able to give you an accurate quote for the treatments after your first consultation and scan.
Both options work with clear aligners to treat various orthodontic conditions to straighten teeth.
Whilst SmileStyler is a small Australian-based company with a forecast of around $6 million for 2018/2019, the American-based company Invisalign is the market leader with a $30 billion market cap.
Invisalign fabricates all aligners at the beginning of the treatment whereas SmileStyler custom-makes new aligners after reviewing the results of each treatment phase’s scan.
SmileStyler treatment is quicker than the traditional Invisalign option, but only takes a little longer than Invisalign Go. However, Invisalign can treat more complex cases than SmileStyler.
Pricewise the costs for both treatments range between $5,000 and $7,500.
