The dangers of sugar for your teeth, and how to take care of them

Not all sugar is bad for you. Fruit has sugar in it, and in healthy doses we all know the health benefits of eating fruit. Strawberries can even contribute to whiter teeth, in moderation.

What you have to look out for is processed sugar. Eating lollies, candy and chocolate as well as drinking soft drink is not the healthiest move you can make. The type of sugar in these foods and drink can—and generally will—rot your teeth.

Although it should be noted, sugar doesn’t technically cause rot. Dental cavities occur when bacteria living in the mouth digest carbohydrate debris left on the teeth after you eat.

The time-honoured tradition of eating sugary treats during Halloween

Halloween is as good an excuse as any to consume surgery treats, and this blog will explain what you can do to mitigate the damage of indulging in all that sugary goodness. Because, after all, we’re not saying you should never have sugary snacks. It’s all about moderation, and taking care of your teeth, gums and general health.

How to take care of your teeth at home

The easiest thing to do after consuming sugary snacks and drinks is to have water. Water is a great way of rinsing your mouth and reducing the amount of sugar sticking to your teeth. Also, if you are out and about chewing sugar-free gum can also help keep your teeth clean and healthy.

Most importantly brush and floss your teeth before you go to bed. You should always brush your teeth twice a day and floss at least once a day.

Brushing your teeth before bed is most important because you don’t produce as much saliva when you sleep which means your teeth aren’t as protected as they are when you’re awake.

Regular check-ups

The other way to protect your teeth is regular dental check-ups with your local Coastal Dental Care dentist. By visiting your CDC dentist every six months for a check-up, scale and clean you are giving your teeth, and gums, the best chance of staying healthy longer.

A scale and clean from a dentist can clean your teeth in a way brushing and flossing cannot. This process removes hard-to-clean plaque and allows your dentist to ensure the health of not only your teeth but your gums as well.
