Oral health resolutions you should make this New Year
Here are some New Year’s resolutions you’ll be able to stick to
Statistics from 2016 showed that just 8% of people achieved their resolution from the year before, and that most people have unrealistic expectations about the speed, ease and consequences of the resolutions they make.
So this year why not make more reasonable goals? Start small, and then work your way up.
Three dental health resolutions to keep your smile looking healthy
- Visit your dentist regularly
A visit to the dentist is seldom very high on someone’s to-do list unless they are in pain. But with just 20 minutes in the dental chair every six months you can avoid more serious problems and keep your teeth and gums healthy.
The benefit of this is it can minimise the need for serious work later on, as well as keeping your teeth relatively pain-free.
- Brush and floss regularly
You should brush your teeth twice a day and floss at least once day. Last year there was some talk around of flossing being useless. It isn’t. Flossing cleans the 30% of a tooth that your toothbrush cannot reach. Flossing helps to prevent decay as well as bad breath which can be caused by food trapped between your teeth. Win-win!
- Reduce sugar intake
It’s not that sugar directly rots your teeth; what actually happens is that a certain type of oral bacteria feeds off sugar to create acids which destroys the enamel of the tooth.
You don’t need to stop eating or drinking sugar all together. Ideally it’s great if you can reduce your intake of them though, as well as increasing your intake of water, and even chewing sugar free gum to help to neutralise the sugar left in your mouth after you’ve eaten.
New Year’s resolutions don’t have to be complicated! So why not start the year off with some easy-to-achieve oral heath resolutions that will improve your oral health and the appearance of your smile.
