Did you know 60% children over 9 yrs old have tooth decay, missing or filled teeth

These statistics have been slowly getting worse—and it needs to change

According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare more than half of children had decay in their permanent teeth. This is terrible. You only have one set of permanent teeth, after that it is dental implants and dentures. We should also mention these statistics are of children who have access to (and actually go to) dental services.

The Tasmanian ADA president said he has been told children are “hospitalised every week” with tooth decay. Additionally, 38% of people over 15 have not visited a dentist in 12 months. Which isn’t all that surprising. Lots of people don’t visit the dentist. The problem is that prevention is better than a cure. The problem is that the longer you put off going to the dentist, the more oral health issues you can wind up with.

Prevention is better than a cure

The best time to bring your child into the dentist is around the time when their first tooth erupts. Did you know you can start looking after your child’s teeth before their teeth even erupt? You can do this by wiping down their gums after a meal and not putting them to bed with juice or milk.

Do you know how important baby teeth are? Your baby teeth act as place holders for adult teeth: but more than this they get your jaw ready for a mouth full of teeth. On top of this they help with the development of speech. Decayed baby teeth can actually negatively affect the development of permanent teeth.

Bring your child to a Coastal Dental Care dental practice, and one of our friendly, caring dental team will help you and provide advice on the best way to look after your child’s dental health.
